About Us

Be There.

SREO Consulting was co-founded in 2013 by Matt Trevithick and Daniel Seckman in order to provide a completely impartial, unbiased and objective view of what is actually happening on the ground in communities affected by violence, natural disaster, and strife across the developing world. Veterans of the Middle East and Central Asia with on-the-ground experience in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Jordan and a combined 15 years in Afghanistan, Matt and Daniel were alarmed by the flood of analysis emerging on the region authored by folks ensconced in far away buildings characterized overwhelmingly by a noteworthy disconnect between vision and reality. The results of this approach are on full display in the daily headlines from around the globe. Thinking there had to be a better way, Matt and Daniel saved a few bucks, bought a good coffee machine, rented a cheap room in a small corner of a nondescript city in Turkey, and set out to reset the bar for quality research on the region.

Four years later, with established partnerships with the world’s leading humanitarian and refugee agencies and offices and staff in six countries, SREO has become a trusted institution that dozens of organizations rely on to better understand their work and the needs of those who desperately need it.

Our Approach

While leaning heavily on industry-standard research methodologies much like other organizations, SREO’s unique differentiator stems from the decades-long investment into building the relationships that allow for these methodologies to come to fruition. No matter how well-designed, projects that are talking to the wrong people can only result in failure and misinformation. There is no short-cut nor quick solution to this problem – only through personally-cultivated relationships over time can humanitarian assessments be conducted with any degree of reliability.

Our singular focus on this is simple and transparent – to even be considered for employment at SREO, beyond a proven track record of high-quality research work, advanced language abilities are the absolute minimum requirement. To do this work well, you must be able to talk to those you are seeking to engage to even begin to understand what’s going on. To read what they’re reading. And to listen. A lot.

This basic approach underscores all the work we do. Simple, high-quality work that helps those who need it most, as it’s understood through their eyes.

Total Independence. No Strings Attached.

SREO prizes and jealously guards its independence, and has no relationships nor funding agreements with any government, institution, center or organization of any kind, nor does it seek any. All revenue (100%) comes from working on various humanitarian assessments and initiatives with our humanitarian partners, and seed funding came entirely from Matt and Daniel, who have to demonstrate proof of utility every day to keep the lights on and doors open. They are solely responsible for the management of SREO and report to no one, and never will.
